Astronomy has undergone a phase transition over the last decade. Today much of the data collected is archived, and there is a world-wide federation of astronomical data centers. The Virtual Observatory is creating a simple common interface layer on top of the world's largest astronomy archives, where most data access is available through a set of simple core services.
The talk will describe lessons learned while building the archive for the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and the National Virtual Observatory.
